    Russia Builds Secret Drone Bases That Could Threaten NATO

    Russia secret drone bases are becoming a growing concern for European security as Moscow expands its infrastructure for long-range attack drones. New military facilities and launch positions reportedly give Russia greater capacity to deploy unmanned systems over long distances, raising questions about the security of NATO’s eastern flank. Russia’s growing reliance on long-range drones represents another major development in modern warfare. The reported expansion of these facilities comes as Moscow continues to improve the range, speed and payload of its attack drones, particularly newer variants of the Geran family.
    Russia is reportedly expanding a network of military and civilian facilities designed to support the launch and operation of long-range attack drones, according to a recent investigation cited by international media. The development has attracted renewed attention from Western security analysts because the growing range, speed and payload of Russia’s newest unmanned systems could potentially bring parts of NATO territory within their operational reach. (The Economic Times) The reported construction of 10 secret drone bases equipped with 59 launch rails represents another indication of how rapidly unmanned warfare is evolving. Rather than relying exclusively on traditional aircraft and cruise missiles, Russia has increasingly incorporated large numbers of attack drones into its long-range strike campaign against Ukraine. The development is particularly significant because several of the reported facilities are positioned in areas that could shorten the distance between Russian launch points and targets across Eastern Europe.

    Russia Expands Its Long-Range Drone Infrastructure

    The reported bases appear to form part of a broader effort to increase Russia’s ability to deploy drones in large numbers. Satellite imagery and open-source analysis have increasingly become important tools for tracking the construction and expansion of military facilities. The reported 59 launch rails could allow Russian forces to prepare and launch multiple drones from several locations rather than relying on a small number of established sites. Such dispersal can make infrastructure more difficult to target while also providing greater flexibility for planning long-range attacks. The development comes as Russia continues to improve the Geran family of attack drones, which are closely associated with the Shahed-type systems used extensively during the war in Ukraine. The newest variants are significantly faster and more capable than the original systems.

    Geran-4 and Geran-5 Increase the Drone Threat

    One of the most important developments is the appearance of newer jet-powered versions of the Geran family. According to Ukrainian defence assessments, the Geran-3, Geran-4 and Geran-5 represent Russia’s effort to increase drone speed and make interception more difficult. The Geran-4 has been reported to reach speeds of up to around 500 kilometres per hour, while the Geran-5 is assessed as being capable of speeds approaching 600 kilometres per hour. (LB.ua) The Geran-5 is particularly notable because it is substantially larger than the original Shahed-type drones and has been reported to carry a warhead of approximately 90 kilograms. Ukrainian intelligence assessments have also put its potential range at around 1,000 kilometres. (Critical Threats) These characteristics make the system more comparable to a small cruise missile than to the slower drones that initially dominated Russia’s long-range drone campaign. The evolution is important because speed directly affects the amount of time available to air-defence systems. Faster drones can reduce reaction windows and place additional pressure on radar operators, interceptor aircraft and surface-to-air missile systems.

    Why NATO Is Paying Attention

    The reported expansion of Russia’s drone-launch infrastructure does not mean that Moscow has decided to attack NATO. That distinction is important. However, the combination of new bases, longer-range drones, higher speeds and increased production capacity creates a military capability that NATO countries cannot ignore. Poland is particularly important in this context. As a NATO member bordering Ukraine and Belarus, Poland occupies a strategically important position on the Alliance’s eastern flank. Warsaw has already invested heavily in strengthening its air-defence and military capabilities because of the security situation created by Russia’s war against Ukraine. A drone capable of travelling hundreds or even around 1,000 kilometres does not necessarily mean every NATO capital is automatically vulnerable. Actual operational range depends on the launch location, flight path, payload, guidance system and other factors. Nevertheless, the growing reach of Russian drones increases the number of scenarios that European defence planners must consider.

    The Changing Nature of Modern Warfare

    The development also demonstrates how dramatically drones have changed modern warfare. During earlier conflicts, long-range attacks were predominantly associated with expensive aircraft and cruise or ballistic missiles. Today, relatively inexpensive unmanned systems can be produced in large quantities and launched in coordinated waves. Russia has used this approach extensively against Ukraine. Large drone attacks can force defenders to expend expensive interceptors against comparatively cheaper incoming systems. Russia has also experimented with combining different types of drones, including slower systems, faster jet-powered variants and decoys designed to complicate Ukrainian air-defence operations. A recent NATO-associated analytical study noted that Russian forces have adapted their drone campaign through increased volume, technical modifications and the introduction of higher-speed UAVs. (NATO JALLC) This creates an increasingly complex challenge for air-defence planners.

    Russia Is Developing Faster and More Sophisticated Drones

    The transition toward jet-powered drones is particularly significant. The traditional Geran-2/Shahed-type system relies on a slower piston engine. Newer variants use jet propulsion, allowing them to travel substantially faster. Ukrainian analysis has reported that the Geran-3 can reach speeds of roughly 370 kilometres per hour, while the Geran-4 can approach 500 kilometres per hour. The Geran-5 has been reported at speeds of up to 600 kilometres per hour, with a range of approximately 1,000 kilometres. (Pravda) These improvements are designed to make the drones more difficult to intercept. According to Ukrainian defence reporting, Russia is also moving toward larger-scale production of these jet-powered systems. Some assessments indicate that Moscow wants jet-powered drones to eventually represent a much larger proportion of its overall attack-drone production. (Pravda)

    Could Russian Drones Reach NATO Territory?

    Technically, some of Russia’s newer long-range drone systems have reported ranges that extend well beyond Ukraine. But range alone does not mean an attack on NATO is imminent. For a drone to strike a particular target, Russia would need an appropriate launch position, a suitable flight route, reliable navigation and a decision to use the weapon against that target. The more immediate concern for NATO is therefore not simply whether Russia possesses drones capable of travelling long distances, but whether Moscow is building the infrastructure and stockpiles necessary to conduct sustained operations at scale. The reported network of bases could contribute to precisely that capability.

    NATO Faces a New Air-Defence Challenge

    For NATO countries, the expansion of Russian drone capabilities creates pressure to strengthen air-defence networks. Traditional missile-defence systems can be extremely effective, but using high-cost interceptors against relatively inexpensive drones can create an unfavourable economic equation. As a result, European militaries are increasingly exploring a combination of technologies, including electronic warfare, short-range air defence, interceptor drones, radar systems and other low-cost counter-drone technologies. The objective is not simply to destroy individual drones but to create layered defence systems capable of handling large numbers of simultaneous threats.

    A Warning Rather Than Proof of an Imminent NATO Attack

    The reported construction of Russian drone bases should therefore be viewed carefully. It demonstrates that Moscow is investing heavily in long-range unmanned warfare and improving its ability to launch drones from multiple locations. It also highlights the growing importance of Eastern Europe’s air-defence network. However, the existence of these facilities does not by itself prove that Russia is preparing an immediate attack against NATO. The more realistic conclusion is that Russia is building military capabilities that could potentially be used against a wider range of targets if the Kremlin made such a decision in the future. For NATO, this means that the strategic environment is becoming more complicated. The war in Ukraine has already demonstrated that drones can influence the outcome of military operations, disrupt infrastructure and overwhelm defensive systems through sheer numbers. Russia’s move toward faster and longer-range systems suggests that the next phase of drone warfare could be even more demanding. As Moscow continues developing the Geran family and expanding the infrastructure needed to deploy it, European governments will likely continue strengthening their air-defence capabilities. The key question is no longer whether drones have become a major part of modern warfare. They already have. The question is how far this technology will evolve — and how effectively NATO can adapt before the next major security crisis emerges.
