The extraordinary announcement comes amid the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict, a naval blockade and growing disruption to one of the world’s most important energy routes.

U.S. President Donald Trump has said that he intends to declare the Strait of Hormuz a territory of the United States, adding a dramatic new dimension to the escalating confrontation between Washington and Tehran.

Trump made the statement on Friday, August 14, 2026, during remarks at the David S. Mack Center for Training and Intelligence in Garden City, New York. According to multiple reports, he said that after the United States finishes defeating Iran, he would “soon” declare the Hormuz Strait a territory of the United States.

The comment immediately drew attention because the Strait of Hormuz is not simply a strategic military location. It is one of the most important maritime passages in the global energy system.

Trump links the declaration to the Iran conflict

Trump’s statement came while discussing the ongoing conflict with Iran and the U.S. naval blockade affecting Iranian ports and shipping routes.

He claimed that Iran was being heavily defeated and said the United States currently has significant control over shipping through the waterway. Reuters separately reported that Trump has defended the blockade while arguing that Americans should accept higher gasoline prices as part of the effort to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

However, the president did not provide details about what a formal declaration of U.S. territory would actually mean, how it would be implemented or what legal mechanism would be used.

    That distinction is important.

Trump’s statement is an announced intention, not confirmation that the Strait of Hormuz has become U.S. territory.

Why the Strait of Hormuz matters

The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. At its narrowest point, the waterway is only about 29 nautical miles wide, making it a natural maritime chokepoint.

Its importance to the global economy is enormous.

The International Energy Agency says an average of approximately 20 million barrels per day of crude oil and oil products passed through the Strait in 2025. That represented roughly 25% of global seaborne oil trade.

Countries including Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain rely heavily on the waterway for energy exports. Any prolonged disruption therefore has the potential to affect oil prices, transportation costs, inflation and energy security well beyond the Middle East.

That is why Trump’s latest statement has attracted international attention.

A major legal and geopolitical question

The idea of declaring the Strait of Hormuz U.S. territory would raise enormous questions under international law.

The waterway lies between Iran and Oman, rather than being an American territorial possession. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea establishes a specific legal regime for international straits.

Under Article 37 of the convention, the transit-passage regime applies to straits used for international navigation between areas of the high seas or exclusive economic zones. Article 38 establishes a right of transit passage, while Article 44 states that coastal states should not hamper that passage.

The Strait of Hormuz is therefore subject to a complicated legal and geographical framework involving the territorial waters of Iran and Oman and internationally recognized navigation rights. Legal analyses of the waterway have identified it as an international strait where transit-passage principles are central to navigation.

That makes Trump’s proposal particularly consequential.

A political declaration from Washington would not, by itself, automatically change the international legal status of the waterway.

The United States and Iran are already in a confrontation over Hormuz

The latest announcement also comes after several days of increasingly aggressive statements regarding the Strait.

On August 12, Trump said the United States had “total control” over the Strait of Hormuz and described the American naval blockade as a “wall of steel.”

The following day, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the U.S. Navy could maintain a blockade of Iranian ports indefinitely by rotating ships in and out of the region.

At the same time, shipping activity through the waterway has been severely disrupted.

Reuters reported on August 14 that vessel traffic had fallen dramatically compared with normal pre-war levels. The agency also reported attacks on two UAE oil tankers, further highlighting the risks facing commercial shipping in the region.

The situation has therefore moved far beyond political rhetoric.

The Strait has become a central part of the military, diplomatic and economic confrontation between Iran and the United States.

Global oil markets are watching closely

The biggest concern for the international economy is what happens if the disruption continues.

With millions of barrels of oil normally moving through the Strait every day, prolonged restrictions could put additional pressure on energy markets.

Higher oil prices can increase transportation and production costs, potentially contributing to inflation in countries that are geographically far removed from the Middle East.

The effects could also extend to airlines, shipping companies, manufacturers and consumers.

For major energy-importing economies, the Strait of Hormuz is therefore not merely a regional security issue. It is a global economic concern.

    What happens next?

For now, the most important point is that Trump’s statement represents a proposed future action rather than a completed territorial change.

There is no indication in the reports reviewed that the United States has formally incorporated the Strait of Hormuz into U.S. territory.

Trump also did not explain what legal, diplomatic or military steps would be necessary to make such a declaration effective.

Any attempt to claim sovereignty over the waterway would almost certainly generate a major international response, particularly from Iran and Oman, while raising questions among other countries whose commercial ships depend on the passage.

For now, the announcement adds another layer of uncertainty to an already volatile situation.

    A developing story

Trump’s comments come at a moment when the Strait of Hormuz is already at the center of the confrontation between the United States and Iran.

The combination of a U.S. naval blockade, attacks involving commercial vessels, reduced shipping traffic and threats of further economic pressure has created an increasingly unstable environment around one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints.

Whether Trump’s proposal becomes an actual policy remains to be seen.

But the announcement alone is significant.

The Strait of Hormuz has now become not only a battlefield and an energy-security issue, but also the subject of an extraordinary proposed U.S. territorial claim.

As the situation develops, governments, energy markets and shipping companies around the world will be watching closely.

Fact-check / freshness note for MozTako

This story is confirmed as current as of August 14, 2026. Reuters published its report on August 14, while Anadolu and other international outlets independently reported Trump’s statement the same day.

Important editorial wording: use “Trump says he will declare” or “Trump says he plans to declare”, rather than “Trump has declared”. The latter would incorrectly suggest that the territorial change has already happened.
