The Colombia earthquake has left at least 77 people dead and hundreds injured after a powerful 7.4-magnitude tremor struck western Colombia on Monday, August 10, 2026. Rescue teams are working around the clock to search damaged buildings, assist survivors and assess the full extent of the destruction.

The Colombia earthquake was centered near San José del Palmar in the department of Chocó and was felt across a large part of the country. Strong tremors were reported in several cities, while authorities continued receiving reports of collapsed buildings, damaged infrastructure and displaced families.

    A Powerful Earthquake Shakes Colombia

The magnitude 7.4 earthquake was strong enough to cause serious structural damage in several communities. Buildings collapsed, roads were affected and emergency services were forced to respond to multiple locations at the same time.

Risaralda has emerged as one of the areas most severely affected. Reuters reported that the department had recorded 42 deaths, while other reports described significant damage in Pereira and surrounding communities. Cali also suffered major structural damage, with more than 25 buildings reported collapsed and people trapped under debris.

The scale of the destruction has made the rescue effort particularly challenging. Emergency workers must search unstable structures while dealing with damaged roads and interruptions to essential services.

Death Toll Could Continue to Rise

Authorities and emergency teams are still working to determine the full human cost of the earthquake.

At least 77 people had been reported dead in the latest Reuters update, while other reports published later in the day placed the death toll at 80. This difference reflects the rapidly developing nature of the disaster and the fact that rescue teams are still searching damaged buildings.

Hundreds of people have also been injured, according to reports, and many families have been forced to leave damaged homes because of structural concerns and continuing aftershocks.

For families waiting for information about relatives, the hours following the earthquake have been particularly difficult. Rescue workers are continuing to inspect collapsed structures and search for survivors.

Pereira and Cali Among the Hardest-Hit Areas

Pereira, in Risaralda, has experienced some of the most serious consequences of the earthquake. Reports indicate that dozens of people were killed in the area, while buildings and other infrastructure were damaged.

Cali has also reported extensive destruction. Several buildings collapsed, leaving people trapped and prompting authorities to deploy additional emergency personnel.

Manizales and other cities have reported structural damage as well. Some airports in affected areas temporarily suspended operations while authorities carried out safety inspections. Airports affected by the disruption included facilities serving cities such as Cali, Pereira, Manizales, Quibdó, Armenia, Cartago and Buenaventura.

These disruptions could complicate the delivery of emergency supplies and the movement of rescue personnel, particularly in communities where roads and other infrastructure have been damaged.

    Government Activates Emergency Response

The Colombian government has moved to coordinate a national response to the disaster. President Abelardo de la Espriella, who had only recently taken office, suspended planned activities to focus on the emergency and coordinate the government’s response.

A national disaster response has been activated to help authorities mobilize resources and coordinate rescue and relief operations.

Emergency teams, local authorities and other agencies are working to assess damaged buildings, assist injured residents and identify communities requiring immediate assistance.

The government’s priority is expected to remain the protection of lives, rescue operations and the provision of essential services to people who have lost access to their homes or basic infrastructure.

    Rescue Operations Continue

Rescue teams are working against time as they search through collapsed buildings for possible survivors.

The first hours after a major earthquake are critical because people trapped beneath debris may still be rescued if emergency teams can reach them quickly. Search operations are therefore being carried out carefully, particularly in structures that may still collapse.

Authorities are also monitoring the possibility of additional tremors. Aftershocks can further weaken already damaged buildings and create additional risks for residents and rescue workers.

People living in affected areas have been advised to follow instructions from emergency authorities and avoid entering damaged structures unless officials confirm that they are safe.

    No Tsunami Warning Reported

Despite the earthquake’s strength and its location in western Colombia, reports indicated that no tsunami warning was issued. However, the country’s emergency authorities remained focused on monitoring aftershocks and assessing damage.

The earthquake was felt far beyond the immediate epicentral region. Reports indicate that tremors were experienced in parts of neighboring countries, including Ecuador and Panama.

    Colombia’s History of Earthquakes

Colombia is located in a region with significant seismic activity because of the interaction of several tectonic plates. As a result, earthquakes are not unusual in the country, although events of this magnitude are much less frequent.

The country has experienced devastating earthquakes and related disasters in the past, including the 1985 Armero tragedy and the 1999 earthquake in the coffee-growing region. These historical events have influenced Colombia’s approach to disaster preparedness and emergency response.

The latest earthquake is therefore likely to renew discussions about building standards, emergency preparedness and the resilience of infrastructure in vulnerable communities.

    International Support Expected

The scale of the disaster has already attracted international attention. Governments and international organizations have expressed solidarity with Colombia and offered assistance as the country begins assessing the damage.

International support can become particularly important if local authorities require additional medical supplies, rescue equipment, temporary shelters or financial assistance.

For now, however, the immediate focus remains on finding survivors, treating the injured and helping displaced families.

    A Country Waiting for Answers

As rescue operations continue, the situation remains fluid. The death toll may change as authorities reach more affected communities and complete assessments of collapsed structures.

For thousands of Colombians, the earthquake has transformed an ordinary day into a humanitarian emergency. Families are waiting for information about loved ones, residents are searching for safe shelter and emergency workers are continuing to operate in dangerous conditions.

The coming days will reveal the full extent of the damage. Beyond the immediate rescue effort, Colombia will face the difficult task of rebuilding homes, restoring infrastructure and supporting communities affected by the disaster.

For now, the priority is clear: save lives, find survivors and provide urgent assistance to those affected by the earthquake.
